There is a difference between compression stockings (commonly known as support stockings) and medical compression stockings (MCS):
Compression stockings are stockings in pressure class 1 and are used preventively or to provide support for relatively minor problems. These stockings are generally not reimbursed from the health insurance, and you can order them at your own expense through our online shop Olfit.nl.
Medical compression stockings are used for more serious conditions and are fully reimbursed from the basic insurance, though they are charged to your excess. To qualify for reimbursement, you will need a referral from your doctor with an appropriate medical indication. MCS are available in pressure classes 2, 3 and 4.
In most cases, you will be reimbursed for two pairs/items of MCS every 12 or 14 months. This depends on your health insurer and whether the stockings are for one or both limbs. The exact reimbursement period varies per health insurer. We have contracts with most health insurers in the Netherlands and handle the claim and declaration process on your behalf. It is advisable to contact your health insurer or consult our compression therapists for specific information regarding your situation.
Some simple donning and doffing aids (such as sliding bags) are included in the fixed reimbursement rate covered by your basic insurance. More complex donning aids can be requested with a referral from your doctor or occupational therapist. Our compression therapists can advise you on this.
Olmed works closely with occupational therapists to ensure you receive the most effective aid. The occupational therapist will guide you through practising with various aids and then provide a recommendation for your health insurer. We take care of the next steps and will order the aid for you.
If you are 18 years or older, you are required to pay mandatory excess for health insurance. The minimum excess is €385. Please consult your policy or ask your health insurer whether this applies to your medical compression stockings or other compression therapy.
Sports compression stockings or compression stockings without a prescription (pressure class 1) may be reimbursed under supplementary insurance. Check with your health insurer or consult your policy to find out if you qualify.
For more information about reimbursements, feel free to contact your health insurer or our compression therapists. We are happy to answer any questions you may have and support you in getting the right aids.
With a suitable aid, you can don and doff your compression stockings independently and with minimal effort.
