Compression stockings (commonly known as support stockings)
If you have mild symptoms, wearing compression stockings (support stockings) in pressure class 1 is usually sufficient. Mild symptoms may include occasional swollen ankles, heavy or restless legs, and mild varicose veins. These pressure class 1 support stockings are often worn for preventive purposes, during pregnancy or as travel socks. You can purchase compression stockings from Olfit, Olmed's online shop. Please note that these compression stockings are not typically reimbursed.
Medical compression stockings
Medical compression stockings fall within pressure classes 2, 3 and 4. These stockings have a therapeutic effect and are used for more severe complaints such as oedema, varicose veins and thrombosis. If you have a doctor's referral, you can schedule an appointment at Olmed to have your medical compression stockings fitted. These stockings are reimbursed through health insurance with the appropriate medical indication but fall under the excess.
If you have a doctor's referral for medical compression stockings, you will be eligible for medical compression stockings in pressure classes 2, 3 or 4. These have a therapeutic effect and are reimbursed through health insurance. However, medical compression stockings do fall under the excess. Read more about reimbursements here.
In most cases, you will receive two pairs of medical compression stockings every 12 or 14 months. You can check which medical stockings you last received and when the required term has expired in MyOlmed. For full details, consult your insurance policy or contact your health insurer. Read more about reimbursements here.
Donning and doffing medical compression stockings requires proper preparation and technique, whether you are doing it yourself, with a partner or with the help of a carer. Ensure that your feet and legs are smooth and free from dry skin to make putting the stockings on easier. Be careful with sharp nails to avoid damaging the stockings.
SEVEN TIPS:
1. Timing: Put your stockings on in the morning when your legs are least swollen.
2. Aids: For anyone needing additional support, we offer a variety of donning aids, ranging from simple donning stockings to more advanced aids that make the process even easier. Watch our instructional videos for detailed information on how to use these aids. Use our online selection tool to find the most suitable aid for you.
3. Grip: Wear rubber gloves for better grip and to prevent damage by nails or jewellery.
4. Technique: Turn the stocking inside out up to the foot section, making sure the heel is positioned correctly. Gradually pull the stocking up without rolling it.
5. Aftercare: It is normal for stockings to slip down during the day. However, if this happens more than four times a day, please contact us.
6. Special skincare products: Avoid using standard creams or ointments before putting on the stockings, as they can affect the elasticity. Instead, apply suitable skincare products, such as those available through our online shop.
7. Care and lifespan: To maintain functionality and longevity, wash your compression stockings daily or every other day with a special mild detergent (without fabric softener). Compression stockings should be replaced every six to 12 months to ensure optimal pressure.
It is important to wear your medical compression stockings daily to prevent symptoms from worsening and to maximise their benefits. We recommend putting them on as soon as possible after getting up and wearing them until you go to bed. If you nap during the day, it is advisable to remove the stockings while sleeping.
In most cases, the medical compression stockings can be delivered directly from stock. However, if the stockings need to be made to measure, the delivery time is usually up to two weeks.
Return your compression stockings (washed) to Olmed for assessment. Our complaints officer will evaluate the damage and respond within 14 days of receipt. Please do not attempt to repair the stockings yourself, as this may void your warranty.
It is advisable to wash medical compression stockings daily, preferably by hand and using a special detergent designed for medical compression stockings. Rinse the stockings well after washing to maintain their condition and prolong their effectiveness. You can also machine wash the stockings, preferably in a laundry bag, at 30°C. Avoid using fabric conditioner. Do not tumble dry the stockings, air dry them. Read more about caring for your stockings here.
Compression stockings can feel very tight initially due to the compression and the fact they are newly knitted. We recommend washing the stockings before wearing them, as this can make a significant difference. Read about the best way to do this and how to care for your medical compression stockings here.
If your stockings continue to feel too tight, contact your compression therapist for advice. Click here for our branches.
After receiving your first pair of medical compression stockings, you will be invited to a check-up appointment after four to six weeks to assess the stockings. After 12 months, you will be notified that it is time to replace your stockings. At that time, you can schedule a new appointment for your legs to be remeasured. If you have any concerns or questions before then, please feel free to contact us.
We offer a six-month guarantee on the medical effectiveness of your stockings, provided they are used correctly. If you experience any issues, please contact us. Return your compression stockings (washed) to Olmed for assessment. Our complaints officer will evaluate the issue or damage and respond within 14 days of receipt. Do not attempt to repair the stockings yourself, as this may void your warranty.
With a suitable aid, you can don and doff your compression stockings independently and with minimal effort.
